Using the Collections

Galvin Rare Book Room

The Galvin Rare Book Room and Special Collections welcomes students, faculty, staff, and other researchers to use the collections for both research and instruction purposes.

General Research Use

When classes are in session, the Galvin Rare Book Room is open Sunday and Monday from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as well as by appointment. Rare book and manuscript materials are made available to researchers but cannot be checked out or removed from the room. Researchers will be required to read and sign a research request form. Depending on the condition of the materials, in many cases digital cameras may be used, but arrangements can be made for digital reproductions as well. Materials may be located through the library catalog and requested via the Rare Books & Special Collections Materials Request Form. We kindly ask that materials be requested at least 48 hours in advance.

Instruction Use:

We welcome and encourage class visits to the Rare Book Room to facilitate student engagement with these materials. As a faculty member, if you are interested in requesting a class visit or developing an assignment or project, please use the Rare Books and Special Collections Instruction Request Form to provide the necessary information. If you are a student interested in working on an assignment or project, please come talk with the archivists during open hours or request an appointment.
